Capello chooses Terry as captain

Capello chooses Terry as captain

John Terry will lead England into the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

England coach Fabio Capello has confirmed the Chelsea skipper will remain as permanent captain, after impressing as skipper during the 2-0 friendly win over the United States in May.

Capello tried four players out as captain, Terry, Rio Ferdinand, David Beckham and Steven Gerrard.

But he has decided to stick with Terry, who was first given the job by Steve McClaren in 2006, and Ferdinand will be vice-captain.

Terry has lifted the Premier League trophy twice with Chelsea and he has led the club to victory in the FA Cup and Carling Cup.

He came back from injury to lead the team into the Champions League final against Manchester United but slipped when he stepped up to take the penalty that would have won the trophy and United went on to win.

His next competitive match as England captain will be the World Cup qualifier against Andorra next month.
